Murshidabad Police District: An Overview

The Murshidabad Police District spans an area of 4253.9 square kilometers, encompassing a diverse and historically significant region in West Bengal, India. The district shares an international border with Bangladesh, stretching 94.9 kilometers, which includes a combination of land and riverine borders. Specifically, the land border extends 32.4 kilometers, with 19 kilometers fenced and 13.4 kilometers unfenced, while the riverine border measures 62.5 kilometers. The Bangladeshi districts adjacent to Murshidabad are Kustia, Nawabganj, and Rajshahi, creating a complex and critical zone for cross-border interactions and security management. Six police stations (PSs) within the Murshidabad district are directly involved in managing the international border with Bangladesh. On the Indian side, these stations include Lalgola, Bhagwangola, Ranitala, Raninagar, Sagarpara, and Jalangi. Correspondingly, on the Bangladesh side, the neighboring stations are Daulatpur, Mirganj, Shibganj, Nawabganj, and Godagori. 

According to the 2011 Census, the population of Murshidabad district is 5,131,499, reflecting a densely populated area that requires extensive policing and administrative oversight. The district is divided into four sub-divisions: Sadar, Kandi, Lalbagh, and Domkal, each supervised by respective zonal Additional Superintendents of Police (Addl. SPs) and Deputy Superintendents of Police (Dy. SPs). This hierarchical structure ensures focused and efficient law enforcement across the district. 

The Sadar sub-division, overseen by the Additional SP (HQ) and Dy. SP (HQ), includes the police stations of Daulatabad, Hariharpara, and Berhampore Women PS. Additionally, the Dy. SP (D&T) supervises Berhampore PS and the Cyber Crime PS. The SDPO Beldanga is responsible for the Beldanga PS, Rejinagar PS, Saktipur PS, and Nowda PS, ensuring comprehensive coverage of this sub-division. In the Kandi sub-division, the SDPO Kandi supervises the Kandi, Burwan, and Khargram police stations, while also holding additional charge of the SDPO Bharatpur, which includes Salar and Bharatpur police stations. This dual role enhances coordination and effective management within the sub-division. 

The Lalbagh sub-division, managed by the Addl. SP (Lalbagh) and SDPO Lalbagh, includes the Murshidabad, Jiaganj, and Nabagram police stations. Additionally, the SDPO Bhagwangola oversees the Ranitala, Bhagwangola, and Lalgola police stations, focusing on areas with significant historical and cultural relevance. 

In the Domkal sub-division, the SDPO Domkal is responsible for the Domkal, Jalangi, Sagarpara, Raninagar, and Islampur police stations. The Addl. SP (Traffic) and Dy. SP (Traffic) oversee traffic management and highway safety across the district.
